In a working world where the threat of automation hangs large, there’s at least one sector of the market that can still offer job security for decades to come: the creative industry.
Imagination is a human trait that can’t be copied, making a career in the creative world all the more appealing for job hunters.
One role that catches the eye more than most is that of a graphic designer. Its mixture of flexible working hours and global opportunities is quickly turning the position into one of the most exciting jobs on the planet. To celebrate this, we’ve come up with a list of seven reasons why you should consider taking a career shift and become a graphic designer.
1) Few Qualifications Required
Let’s face it – many well-paid jobs require you to have some form of qualification from a recognized institution, such as JMC Adacemy.
Thankfully, getting an entry-level job in graphic design is as much about your portfolio as your qualifications.

That means career paths into the industry are varied. As long as you can prove you’ve got the talent, there’s no reason why you can’t be successful.
2) No Two Days are Ever the Same
Every client has different desires that need to be fulfilled, which means life as a graphic designer involves plenty of variety. Having to think of new ways to be creative on a daily basis is part of the reason why graphic designers continuously rank at the top of job satisfaction ratings.
3) Tons of Independence
Office jobs often come with a strict dress code. That rulebook, however, rarely applies in creative agencies, where employees are usually free to pick and choose comfortable outfits.
Of course, not all graphic designers work in an office. Freelancers, for example, have the option of working from home in their pajamas. Alternatively, they may choose to dress up in a three-piece suit. The point is that they have a choice in their attire when millions of others do not.
4) More Flexible Hours and Location
With the battery life of laptops increasing almost yearly, graphic design is a job that is portable; it’s just as doable outdoors as it is at an office desk. Employers have started to recognize this and are allowing more staff than ever to work from home.
This is obviously all possible thanks to the internet. Freelancers now have the option of working almost anywhere on the planet as long as there’s a reliable wi-fi signal close by.
The beautiful thing for graphic designers is that they’re able to choose between the security of working for a creative agency in a standard office setting, or the flexibility of going freelance.
5)Opportunity to Work for International Employers
The growth of the internet and the subsequent ability to connect with employers from all over the world has resulted in a boom in the number of freelancers. Close to half of all millennials in the United States are now said to work as a freelancer in some form, according to an independent 2017 study by the research firm Edelman Intelligence.
A global economy for graphic designers opens up greater earning potential and helps protect them from any downturn in their domestic economy.
6) Pays Reasonably Well
The average yearly salary for a graphic designer who lives in the United States is around $40,000. While that’s not enough to buy your private island, it’s more than enough to live comfortably.
7) Continuously-Evolving Job
Who knows what the future may bring, but with software and hardware advancing at a rapid rate, graphic designers can look forward to a future where their only limit will be their imagination.
