Ludwig Favre’s surreal and paint-like photographs of New York’s Chinatown before it wakes up

Early one morning, during a recent visit to New York, Ludwig Favre was inspired to wander around the city’s famous Chinatown, taking photographs of Manhattan’s wonderfully colourful district, before it sprung to life.

The series, entitled New York, By The Way, starts off in darkness and then develops with the sunrise, and follows the usual surreal and paint-like style and quality we’ve come to expect from the French photographer.

“It was the last party of the night and very early in the morning, so the streets were almost empty,” Ludwig explains. “I was catching my flight back home later that day and had wandered out for breakfast. With my Lumix G9 in hand, I let myself get carried away by the colours of the lights, reflected in the rain-soaked city streets.”

Specialising in major cities and American landscapes, Ludwig Favre has travelled the world documenting the people and places he visits. His clients range from BMW and Canon to Panasonic, and he has won numerous awards and partaken in many international exhibitions. Discover more at ludwigfavre.com.
